Info

Ladybird Sandboarding is our business. This cool, exciting new outdoor adventure will attract the young who seek the adrenalin rush and thrill when navigating the dunes; as well as the not so young who are active folk prepared to venture new forms of sport. We will also offer the activity as a corporate team building event. Sandboarding is one of those accessible skills that is easy to learn. The team will go through some simple training before spending a day on the slopes. The team build combines fun, fitness and mental challenges all in the naturally beautiful great outdoors.

The best white sand dunes are found in the nature reserve in Atlantis which is situated approximately 40 minutes drive from Cape Town Central. From this part of the world you have a stunning, panoramic view of Table Mountain, the site which has been shortlisted as a "wonder of the world". This is where we will be taking our clients on the sand boarding adventure. It is an exhilarating, easy-to-learn adventure activity and a great introduction to snowboarding and other board sports.

We will provide you with the correct sand board, wax and helmet. We also take care of the permit and your transport into the dunes. You only have to bring along some sun block, water and snacks and a broad smile! We offer full instruction, teaching you how to easily master the basics to more advanced sand boarding techniques, and of course, ensuring exciting, fun filled action.

Part of the package of sandboarding is the fact that the adventure is captured on digital and video camera (for groups over 10 people) by our capable instructors. The evening, after the adventure, the photos gets uploaded to the Ladybird Sandboarding group on Facebook and the clients all get a Facebook invitation to the group for future contact as well as being tagged.

History

Many consider Sandboarding to be the latest adventure sport in South Africa but it has been coming on for quite some time. Evidence has been found that Egyptians used planks of pottery and wood to ride the dunes of Eqypt in the days of the pharoahs. Rare black and white photos of the more recent WW2 showed stand up boarding went back to even then. The sport got its biggest boost in the 1970's when Jack Smith pioneered stand up boarding that was quickly taken up by bored surfers and skate boarders.

Though there were some earlier pioneers like Derek Bredenkamp that boarded Swakopmund in and around 1974 we had to wait till 2000 for the sport to get a huge kick start in Southern Africa. Coastal and inland boarders teamed up and the Sandboarding South Africa league was established. Sandboarding competitions started in 2001 when SA camps were held in 2002 up and until 2004. Unfortunately the sport took a bit of a dip in 2005 with no further development in the sport and the league collapsed.

Ladybird Sandboarding was established in 2007. With its primary focus, even still today, to establish the sport and grow it with dedicated local riders in South Africa. Tremendous inroads have been made to make the public aware of the sport with open days, media coverage and affordable tours where the participants receive dedicated hands on training from skilled instructors using top notch equipment. Currently LBSB has the 2nd largest sandboarding community in the world and the largest in the southern hemisphere.
